I’ve been banging on for years about wanting to try stand-up, just as a bucket list thing – but never really thought I’d actually do it. So I was pretty anxious when my wife gave me a voucher for Mike’s course as a Christmas present, and told me to put my money where my mouth was.
Turns out I needn’t have worried – Mike’s course was absolutely brilliant!
His years of experience and insight as a pro stand-up were completely invaluable in helping me and my fellow newbies hone our sets in readiness for our showcase. Telling us when our jokes were bad (and even when they were good!), when we were going too fast, or saying too much (like I am now). He was generous with his feedback and told great stories about his experiences on the circuit – it was just a wonderful privilege to be able to start learning a new craft from someone who really knows his shit!
Of course, the nerves on the big day were almost intolerable, but as Mike told us repeatedly – you’ve all had worse than no-one laughing at you – and thankfully it turns out it wasn’t a problem for any of us in the end, anyway.
It’s been an all-round brilliant, funny, fascinating, terrifying and ultimately, uniquely rewarding experience! One of the best things I’ve ever done. If you’re thinking of giving it a go, then go for it with Mike, he’s the Man!
